I started DJ ing at the age of 15. I
had not many friends and there is only but so much TV that I could possibly
watch. After listening to tapes of DJ Red Alert on KISS FM in 1984, and ruining
my mother’s stereo, she decided that this could possibly be my hobby. Instead of
getting in trouble with the hoodrats and the drug dealers in the street, getting
me musical equipment would be a good way to keep me out of trouble and to also
be able to keep an eye on me.
We went to Crazy Eddie and bought a
demo Numark mixer for $350 for Christmas. A few days after Christmas, she got
me my second turntable after buying the first for $80 at Tops Appliance. We
went back to get a second one to complete the set. I already had a tape deck
that was hooked up to the radio and used that to make tapes for myself. I
practiced diligently for about four years before I started working on Technics
1200 Turntables. I then got my new Technics turntables and really started
improving my skills on the turntables.
In 1989, I started to assist with
talk shows and other Hip Hop shows on the air at W.R.S.U. FM at Rutgers University.
In 1990 I made my demo and began a radio show on Monday night called Monday
Night Hip Hop. Armed with a program grant from Planet X Music (my best source of
vinyl), the show slowly progressed from a one hour time slot to a two hour time
slot weekly as I also assisted with African Kaleidoscope on Wednesday nights as
the producer and engineer and also assisted with engineering duties on Black
Expressions, a House music show.
In 1992, I was introduced to the party
scene with various local promoters and also two groups that started in college.
TJ Productions and Trust Productions. With TJ Productions, headed by founders
Todd Gardner and Josh Suggs (now owner of Delta’s Restaurant), I assisted with
Djing duties in the Hip Hop/Reggae/R&B/House room in a club named the Down
Under. I mixed for various TJ Productions from 1993 to 1997 until the club was
shut down and renamed the High Hat Club and format was changed. With Trust
Productions, founded by Tawana Hogue, Ted Wilkins, and myself, the primary
functions were for Rutgers University's Founders Week, Freshman Orientation,
Rutgers University Student Life, organizations such as Rutgers College Program
Council, Livingston College Program Council, The Rutgers Lesbian and Gay
Coalition and Rutgers fest. Trust Productions disbanded after graduation.
In 1998, I began doing some local clubs on
a regular basis which included, The Bowl-O-Drome, Big Daddy’s (now known as the
Corona Club), The Roxy, The Elk’s Club, and Club Escape (now called Los Molinos).
With lack of adequate security, all of these clubs where shut down. I
continued doing small events and weddings until 1999 when I did some
substitution work in the Hip Hop room at Club Paradise. However, after
restructuring, I began working with an old friend, Barry Byrd at Playroom
Entertainment where I am current resident DJ. The radio show on WRSU changed
days from Monday to Friday and is now currently running as Friday Night Vyagra
which features new major releases and independent releases from up and coming
rappers. I am also resident DJ at Prophet Entertainment, founded by
Eric Levan, also a long time friend and House DJ.
Currently, I produce the Friday Night
Vyagra on 88.7 W.R.S.U. FM. I also DJ for Playroom Entertainment and
Prophet Entertainment with the hopes of being able to start Djing for a major
radio station as well as the larger club venues and promotions. I can be reached
